Even as a little kid, I was fascinated with defining space for the human experience: I built forts, raked the leaves into floor plans, and imagined whole new worlds in which I could play. Naturally I assumed that I would become an architect and revolutionize the field. And while I thoroughly enjoyed my years as an Architecture major, it eventually became clear to me that it was not the right match for my talents. My designs were complicated and unconventional, and the physics made my head spin. Wanting to be free of the conventions and limitations of the field, I switched my major to Illustration, where I hoped to express myself though paintings and drawings. I was reminded, however, that I am a three-dimensional thinker, and in no time, I convinced my teachers to allow me to build my paintings. I began to create what I call immersive environments (the first project being a giant egg) and soon discovered that I had finally found a unique blend between my illustrative and architectural passions.
Upon graduation, I explored the scenic industry creating commercial sculptures and scenery for zoos, theme parks, museums, etc. A few years ago, I was asked to design for theater and again a transformation happened; I could completely fulfill my desire for design with limitless expression. I immediately recognized the value of the captive audience and how the design affects them. I could truly control the environment in which I immersed them. Not only is it a perfect match for me, my work has been well received and a door has opened that will not close. Designing for theatre demands what I have grown to love: creating immersive environments.
It all started with an egg
